The Cost Curve Doesn’t Lie: Why Green Molecules Still Win

Three years ago, Namibia was being talked about as the next great green energy frontier. A sparsely populated country with world-class sun and wind poised to become a green hydrogen superpower. Since then, the mood has cooled. Financial close on large-scale projects is taking longer, due to slower market demand ramp-up and geopolitical headwinds.  Has the opportunity come and gone for Namibia?

It hasn’t. The scale-up has been slower than the early hype promised, but the underlying fundamentals that position Namibia as a major emerging supplier remain unchanged. If anything, it has strengthened. To understand why, it helps to look for the signal amongst the market noise, to the direction that the global energy system is actually heading.

Namibia-Germany Enterprise and Supplier Development Mission

Hyphen Hydrogen Energy has concluded the Namibia-Germany Enterprise and Supplier Development Mission, a seven-day programme designed to connect Namibian businesses and training institutions with German technical, industrial and training partners.

Windhoek, 17 July 2026 – Hyphen Hydrogen Energy (Hyphen) has successfully facilitated and concluded a high-level strategic engagement for Her Excellency Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, President of the Republic of Namibia, and her high-ranking ministerial delegation. The engagement in Chengdu, China, was held with China National Chemical Engineering Corporation 7 (CC7), a key subsidiary of the state-owned China National Chemical Engineering Corporation (CNCEC).

The landmark meeting represents a critical milestone in developing international cooperation between Hyphen and its key implementation partner, CC7, as Hyphen looks to play its part in accelerating Namibia’s transition into a global green energy powerhouse.

Led by Hyphen’s CEO, Marco Raffinetti, the Hyphen executive team formally introduced Her Excellency and her delegation to CC7’s senior leadership, led by Chairman Mr. Long Haiyang. Discussions focused on introducing CC7, explaining its role in the project, and identifying areas for further collaboration.

CC7 Chairman Mr. Long Haiyang, stated after the high-level meeting, “It was an exceptionally productive meeting, and we are deeply honoured that Her Excellency, the President of Namibia, travelled to China and chose to engage directly with our organization. This visit fills us with immense pride and underscores the profound strategic importance both of our nations place on the green transition and on the flagship Hyphen project.”

In 2025, Hyphen awarded CC7 the major Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) and Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contracts for the chemical ammonia production facility.

The Namibian Government, which holds a 24% equity stake in Hyphen as Namibia’s flagship project, has placed green hydrogen at the center of its national economic and decarbonization strategy. Reinforcing this active state backing, President Nandi-Ndaitwah explicitly encouraged Namibian enterprises to leverage international partnerships of this caliber.

Marco Raffinetti, CEO of Hyphen Hydrogen Energy, commented: “CC7 brings world-class technical expertise and a proven delivery track record in large-scale chemical and infrastructure projects. We were very pleased to facilitate this direct introduction to Her Excellency and her ministers, underscoring the strong Sino-Namibian partnership driving this transformative project forward. “

Giuseppe Surace, Chief Operating Officer of Hyphen, added: “CC7, and its mother company CNCEC, are one of the world’s leading large-scale engineering and construction groups, with deep capabilities and a proven track record of successful project implementation both in China and internationally.  It is for this reason that Hyphen and CC7 are discussing extending CC7’s scope in the delivery of the project.”

About Hyphen

Hyphen Hydrogen Energy (Pty) Ltd is a Namibian registered green hydrogen development company, which has awarded the rights through a public tender to develop Namibia’s first large scale green hydrogen project on Government owned land. Hyphen is a joint venture between ENERTRAG SE and Nicholas Holdings Limited. The Government of the Republic of Namibia holds a 24% shareholding in Hyphen via its blended finance company SDG Namibia One.

Hyphen’s project is being developed as the first step in the implementation of the Government’s strategy for the development of a large-scale green hydrogen industry in various regions in Namibia to support both economic growth in Namibia and assist the world in achieving its decarbonisation goals. At full scale development, the project will produce 2 million tonnes of green ammonia annually for regional and global markets, from ~7GW of renewable generation capacity and ~3GW of electrolyser capacity, cutting 5-6 million tonnes (annually) of CO2 emissions, with Namibia’s annual 2021 emissions totalling 4.01 million tonnes.
